YOUTH GROUP NEWS
The first weekend in November, Colleen and I took four youth members to Concordia University for Youth ministry. The youth’s had a very good time and were able to stay with some campus students.
The Halloween Party the youth put on was very successful. We had about 20 kids and their parents. We had games, crafts, and food. The theme this year for the Halloween Party was Scooby Do.
After the holidays, the youth group will be starting to collect food and things for the Ronald McDonald House. We will give you more information in January.

WOMEN”S GUILD NEWS
On Sunday, February 27th, Angelica’s fabulous Chili Cook-off contest took place. There was over a dozen different varieties of chili, at least one of which matched everyone’s taste. Some were very spicy (that’s why Tums were available), some were mild, but most were in-between. There was even extra-healthy turkey chili available. The winners of the cook-off will be listed in the next newsletter. Everyone appeared to have a great time. The Women’s Guild especially thanks all those who participated either by making a pot of chili or as serving as judge (read - those brave enough to try the chili). And we had so much fun that we are already looking forward to next year’s contest.
In other news, the Women’s Guild, along with many in the congregation, is looking forward to attending the Women of the Year luncheon at the Palazzo Grande in Shelby Township on Tuesday, March 15th. Sue Fraser, chosen to represent Angelica, will be honored at that luncheon. Miss Katie Stam, Miss America for 2009, will be the guest speaker. Her topic is “My Faith and My Journey”.
On Wednesday, March 23rd, the Women’s Guild will serve luncheon immediately following the 11 a.m. Lenten service. We invite, and encourage, everyone to attend both the Lenten service and the lunch.
We look forward to seeing you at our next Guild meeting on Wednesday, March 2nd at 1:00 p.m. All are invited. The meetings are held in the church lounge.

GARDEN CLUB NEWS
November 2010 is a special time for the Garden Club - it was 30 years ago when a group of caring, concerned members joined together to form the Angelica Garden Club dedicated to helping care for the church grounds. It takes much time and energy to plan, plant and maintain the grounds the Lord has given to us to beautify.
The fountains in the Courtyard and the Nativity scene were donated by generous church members: the cross was originally over the Park Avenue entrance to the church.
Over the years, we have made many friends and developed relationships with each other by working together in the gardens and on fundraisers to pay for our materials and supplies - flower sales, rummage sales, ice cream socials, selling light bulbs & “magic cloths”, and even publishing a cookbook.
Along with the work there is much satisfaction in seeing the plants flourish and watching their beauty develop.
Our group has grown smaller as we age and lose members. We are always happy to welcome new hands and faces. Please feel free to join us!
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF LENT
Lent is the fourth season of the Christian year. Its length is the 40 days preceding Easter Day, not counting Sundays. This means Lent always begins on a Wednesday, known as Ash Wednesday.
Lent commemorates Jesus’ fast and temptation in the wilderness of Judea Province, which, according to the Gospel, lasted 40 days. Just as Jesus confronted his temptations during these 40 days, Lent helps Christians focus on our most basic need as sinners: forgiveness.
The only way our Lord’s forgiving power can become effective in our lives is by our taking the initiative to confront our sins, confess them and repent of them. In short, Lent is a season of penitence.
Some Christians fast during Lent. This denial of bodily comforts can help encourage self-reflection about the need for Jesus’ forgiveness.
THE SEASON OF LENT BEGINS WITH ASH WEDNESDAY, MARCH 9th
On the Wednesday mornings (11am) and evenings (7pm) of Lent special services will be held with the theme People of the Passion.
The Passion (Suffering) of Jesus Christ was all about people. Jesus suffered and died for all kinds of people. All kinds of people had a hand in His suffering and death. All kinds of people were there.
We will gather to ponder Jesus’ Passion, reaching its most important point in His death and His resurrection. We will do so by looking closely at several people of the Passion. We will ask you to put yourself in their places. Imagine that you were there - a part of the Passion of Jesus Christ. See what that teaches you about His sacrifice.
All are encouraged to attend these services as we prepare for the celebration of our salvation accomplished for us by Jesus on Easter.
