God’s Cookout

Isaiah 25:6
 “On this mountain the Lord of Hosts will prepare for all people a feast with the best foods.”

 

Cookouts are very popular in America. Almost every backyard has some sort of grill. Isaiah 25 describes Heaven as a cookout on a mountain, with God spreading out a wondrous feast. The Scriptures also speak of the Lord’s Supper as being a foretaste of the feast to come.

The description of the best foods sounds inviting, but only if you are hungry. Many do not have time for the food at God’s cookout. They are busy tending to their jobs, paying bills, and going on vacations. They just do not have time for the Word of God. Is that you problem? Full of hamburger, one does not have room for even the tastiest steak. Full of ourselves, we may not be hungry for God and His love.

When we live only to satisfy our whims, we discover that everything tastes flat. Even the finest drink and filet mignon fail to satisfy. Spacious swimming pools and growing bank accounts do not satisfy. Selfishness is sin, and the wages of sin is death. Only when we are empty do we admit our hunger for God.

God wants to fill us. He sent His Son to fast for 40 days in the wilderness and to drink the bitter cup of suffering by dying on the Cross. By His death Jesus invites us to attend God’s great cookout in Heaven, freely and without charge. He not only invites us but encourages us to invite others as well.

Think about these things the next time you gather with your family for a cookout.
