Angelica Lutheran Church Organ Renovations
View of pipework of the Swell division. Left to right: 8’ Oboe, 8’ Flute Celeste, 8’ Vox Humana, 8’ Flauto Dolce; passage; Cornet IV, Tierce 1-3/5’, Harmonic Piccolo 2’, Nazard 2-2/3’, 4’ Flute Octaviante, 4’ Principal, 8’ Voix Celeste GG (basses tied), 8’ Rohrflote, 8’ Viola da Gamba. Each one is tuned individually, requiring a good ear and a very careful touch, and there are 1,184 of them in just that chamber.
16” pipes of the Pedal Trombone and the new two-rank 8’ Flute Celeste. The wooden supports for Trombone were built at our shop, a tricky matter requiring about three days’ work.
Looking down at the pipes of the original Swell Main chest (with additions). Four-rank Cornet mixture is on left, installed on its “new” channeled toeboard built at our shop (four pipes per note) in order to free other actions for additional ranks.
Swell Cornet IV, Tierce 1-3/5’, Harmonic Piccolo 2’, Nazard 2-2/3’, 4’ Flute Octaviante (wood), 4’ Principal, 8’ Voix Celeste, 8’ Rohrflote (wooden stoppers), 8’ Viola da Gamba.
Rear portion of the original Swell Main chest also showing part of Tremolo wind conductor.
Pipes and unit windchests of the Swell Bourdon, all completely refurbished prior to installation at Angelica, requiring around five weeks of our labor plus parts and materials. Originally from 1927 organ in Akron, OH. Purchased from a friend’s storage locker for $200. These pipes and actions new would cost about $9,000 plus shipping. Lots of nice wood and a whole lot of work. Note small trembles are of metal, taken from unused portion of another set we acquired from Seattle.
Pipes of the Great division, showing (left to right) 4’ Octave, 4’ Flute, trebles of 8” Violoncello, 8’ Clarinet (resonators tied up), 8’ Trumpet, 8’ Melodia is wooden pipes in background.
Closer view of 8’ Trumpet trebles (note harmonic break and seven new reed pipes) with 8’ Melodia and Pedal Bourdon pipes in background.
Recently-installed and newly-mitered basses of Great 8’ Trumpet, located in nearly-inaccessible space in back of north chamber on one of the ex-Birmingham actions, refurbished at our shop. Originally scrolls, now soldered-up, can be seen in tops of resonators. Upright pipe supports made new in Casavant style. Wooden pipes in background are from Seattle, WA, and are installed on action built from scratch in our shop.
Overhead view of Great Pipework. Left to right: 8’ Diapason trebles (barely visible in upper left corner), 8’ Melodia (wood), 8’ Trumpet; passage; Mixture III (3 ranks), 8’ Clarinet, 2’ Fifteenth, trebles of 8’ Violoncello, 4’ Lieblich Flote, 4’ Octave. Basses of 8’ Violoncello (original portion of the shop) are located on unit action in the background, with smaller pipes out of view. Behind Violoncello basses is the grillework opening into the north transept. In this view, all pipes to the right of the passage board are new, except that the 4’ flute was previously located where the Trumpet now stands.
View beneath Great Main windchests, showing rebuilt reservoir, new wind conductors (at left), new concussion pneumatic (wedge-shaped assembly with compass spring), replacement flexible rubbercloth “wind sock” feeding original Great Main windchest, inlet curtain valve box, and main wind line (at right) from basement blower room. Electrical contact bar for stop actions is shown at upper left, and the newly-made contact bar and unit magnets for treble notes 33 through 56 of the 8’ Violoncello are shown in upper foreground. Pedal 16’ Bourdon pipes in background.
