The owners of KFUO-FM/CLASSIC99 sold the station in early 2010. After more than 62 years of broadcasting-the longest-running FM station in St. Louis-KFUO-FM went silent on July 6th, 2010. The loss of the St. Louis region’s only voice exclusively dedicated to classical music and the arts left a deep void in the lives of thousands of loyal listeners, and an entire community. KFUO-AM (850) continues to broadcast from the same facilities, located on the Concordia Seminary campus in Clayton, Missouri.
The sale of radio station KFUO-FM involved only the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) broadcast license, the broadcast transmitter and tower, and other items related to terrestrial broadcast operations. The web domain (CLASSIC99.com), the studios and offices, and most other technical equipment and facilities remain at the original location. That is, the infrastructure is available to continue streaming the musical content.
The historic library of CLASSIC99, containing some 30,000 CDs, remains under the watchful care and custodianship of KFUO Radio. It is this library that we are sharing with the world on CLASSIC99.com. Under the direction of KFUO radio management, volunteers currently manage the operation, and provide the voices and programming that you hear 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. These volunteers include several staff members from the former KFUO-FM.
